Plan Management vs Self-Management vs Agency-Managed: What’s Right for You?

31/10/23, 10:00 pm

When you become an NDIS participant, one of the key decisions you’ll need to make is how your funding will be managed. There are three main options available: NDIA (Agency) Managed, Self-Managed, and Plan Managed. Each option has its own advantages and limitations, and the right one depends on your lifestyle, preferences, and level of confidence with financial admin.

Let’s break down what each option means and help you decide which suits you best.

1. NDIA (Agency) Managed

In this option, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) takes care of all payments and invoices for you.

How it works:

  • Your service providers send invoices directly to the NDIA.

  • NDIA pays the invoices on your behalf.

  • You can only use NDIS-registered providers.

Pros:

  • Simple to use.

  • No admin responsibilities.

  • The NDIA ensures all payments comply with rules.

Cons:

  • Limited provider choice – you can only use registered providers.

  • No flexibility for hiring someone you know (like a trusted local support worker who isn’t registered).

  • Less visibility and control over your budget.

Best for:

People who prefer a hands-off approach and are happy sticking with registered providers.

2. Self-Managed

With self-management, you’re in full control. You manage the invoices, payments, and budgeting yourself.

How it works:

  • Providers send invoices to you.

  • You pay them out-of-pocket and get reimbursed by the NDIS, or claim and pay directly from your NDIS portal.

  • You can use any provider, registered or not.

Pros:

  • Maximum choice and control.

  • Can hire family members or local providers who aren’t registered.

  • Flexibility in how supports are delivered.

Cons:

  • You do everything – from paying invoices to managing paperwork and ensuring compliance.

  • Can be time-consuming and stressful if you're not familiar with admin or digital systems.

  • You’re responsible for keeping receipts and tracking your own budget.

Best for:

Participants who are confident with paperwork and want full flexibility over how they use their funding.

3. Plan Managed

This option provides the freedom of self-management but with the convenience of professional financial help.

How it works:

  • Your providers send invoices to your Plan Manager.

  • The Plan Manager handles claims, payments, and keeps track of your budget.

  • You get access to both registered and non-registered providers.

Pros:

  • No cost to you – it’s fully funded by the NDIS.

  • You still have full choice and control over providers.

  • Less admin – someone else handles invoices and budgets.

  • You receive regular statements and updates.

  • Plan Managers help you stay compliant and avoid funding issues.

Cons:

  • You rely on your Plan Manager’s systems – so choose someone reliable and responsive.

  • You don’t directly manage the NDIS portal yourself.

Best for:

People who want flexibility with their providers but don’t want the burden of handling financial tasks.
